DESCRIPTION
People from around the world recognise the flavour of garlic. It goes with so many food types and is used throughout Mediterranean and Asian cooking. It comes in the form of a bulb and has cloves that can be cooked. You can crush, chop, mince and slice garlic and it can be purchased by the bulb, minced in a jar, as flakes or as garlic powder.
COMPLIMENTARY FLAVOURS
There are so many different foods, herbs and spices that go with garlic that I couldn’t possibly list them all. Some of them include; asparagus, potatoes, mushrooms, soy sauce, carrots, lemon, tomatoes, honey and meat.
As for herbs and spices; bay leaves, basil, cumin, ginger, oregano, parsley and thyme are among some of the many complimentary flavours to garlic.
WHAT TO USE INSTEAD OF GARLIC
Garlic has its’ own, unique flavour, however is related to leeks and onion which are also strong in flavour. This makes them a good option as a substitute for garlic.
TYPES OF FOOD THAT FEATURE GARLIC
From soups to roast meat and veggies, garlic brings another dimension to a variety of dishes. As garlic goes so well with tomatoes, it finds its’ way into many tomato based sauces such as pizza sauce and pasta sauces. Speaking of sauces, it can also be used in salad dressings and marinades.
STORING GARLIC
Cloves can be kept fresh for a couple of days just by putting them in a zip lock bag in fridge.
As for garlic bulbs, they can last for up to 2 months if they are kept uncovered in the dark, at a cool room temperature with good airflow.
If you want garlic flakes, bake minced garlic and then store in an air tight jar for up to 3 months. As garlic burns easily, keep your oven on the lowest heat and dry them out for 3 hours.
